Addressing the Root Cause of Thyroid Disease

The Functional Health and Acupuncture Institute will host a workshop to provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved with thyroid and immune health. The event, led by Glenn Gruby, will take place at 10:15 a.m. on November 3 at the Cherry Hill Library, and will address overlooked root causes of thyroid disease. Participants will learn strategies to improve thyroid metabolism and increase energy and overall health.

An estimated 20 million Americans have thyroid disease and, of those, up to 60 percent are unaware of their condition. Thyroid disease can present a wide array of symptoms such as weight gain, depression, anxiety, hair loss, brain fog and fatigue. The conventional medicine approach to thyroid conditions is almost exclusively oriented toward disease management, using drugs or surgery to correct out-of-range thyroid lab markers. Albeit, many patients still struggle with debilitating symptoms even though their labs look normal. This is due to the underlying triggers not being addressed by the thyroid medication.

Functional Medicine offers a different approach to thyroid treatment by attempting to identify the root cause triggers of the disease. Autoimmune disease accounts for 90 percent of hypothyroidism and identifying and addressing inflammatory triggers that imbalance the immune system is important for helping those with the condition feel better. Stress, hormone imbalance, gut function, toxins, infections, blood sugar imbalances and nutrient deficiencies are all considered when addressing thyroid conditions. This more comprehensive approach allows patients to discover the root cause of their disorder while developing strategies to improve health.
