Natural Awakenings South Jersey

Fungi in the Soil, Mushrooms in the Kitchen

The Horticultural Society of South Jersey will host Fungi in the Soil, Mushrooms in the Kitchen, a presentation with Tyler Case, of Mycopolitan, at 7 p.m., September 23, at Carmen Tilelli Hall, in Cherry Hill.

Case will discuss the pivotal role that fungi play in soil biology and ecology. Attendees will learn about mycelium, which breaks down wood, channels water and minerals and provides transport for plant signaling. These processes are largely unseen except for mycelium’s fruit: mushrooms. Popping up just long enough to cast spores and then disappearing into the forest, these fungi are often delicious, nutritious and medicinal.

Case will discuss how individuals can mimic nature to grow mushrooms indoors and out, and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Location: 820 Mercer St. For more information, call 856-816-8508 or visit hssj.org.
