Black Belt is a Beginning - An Aikido Lesson in Fortitude

Earning the rank of Black Belt in a traditional martial art is worth seeking. It should be difficult. It should require sacrifice over time and should never feel like something owed to someone for any reason.

I have to imagine that everyone that started their practice in martial arts had the distant goal of one day achieving a Black Belt. They may have even achieved it only to slowly lose their drive to keep going. If one was focusing solely on reaching Black Belt, they likely blocked out the value of the journey and are now left with nothing to hold on to continue. The person would be at the end of a proverbial rope and can’t see where else to go or how they can possibly go further. Rather than an ultimate end in itself, the Belt is our reminder that we are “in the game”. We are relied upon by others and have an obligation to continue to trust the process that brought us this far. It is the “polishing of the sword” that is the final step in forging that brings sharpness to the edge.

In life’s journey, we hold on to memories of pitfalls overcome and are strengthened to continue with assurance to face the pitfalls ahead. Advice often given in the Dojo is to cultivate the mind of the beginner. When one started, one had a fresh approach. Our goals can motivate us and can also get in our way. Working continually to maintain our honest effort along with appreciation for the efforts of others will offer long-term accomplishments and lasting rewards.

The name given our Dojo is “Agatsu”, a term exerted from a saying cited by the founder of Aikido – Masakatsu Agatsu Katsu Hayabi – “Moment of Correct Victory over Self”. Each time we begin practice, we are reminded to clear our mind from outside distractions and focus on our active participation. Be open and responsive to the task. Don’t over analyze our expectations and performance. In Aikido, there is only competition with Self. While we may have started our journey full of expectations, we should decide quickly to allow ourself the opportunity to be a student and enjoy the journey. Earning a Black Belt is a worthwhile goal. Rather than focusing on the finish line in the race, be sure to make it to the starting line; stay on the path, reach the finish and keep going. With this mindset, we are reflecting a “Black Belt Mindset” that will serve us well in all life’s journeys.
