Vitamin D and COVID-19 Mortality Rate

Jun 29, 2020 05:20PM ● By Shae Marcus

A recent Indonesian study, led by Prabowo Raharusuna, has identified patterns of mortality among patients infected with COVID-19 and uncovered a significant association between the death rate and vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. The key findings revealed that a majority of the death cases were male, older, had pre-existing conditions and below normal vitamin D serum levels, suggesting a strong association. The researchers further concluded that controlling for other variables known to influence COVID-19 outcomes, vitamin D-deficient patients may be 10 times more likely to die from the disease. In concluding, the team recommends further investigation into the role of vitamin D supplementation to establish the underlying mechanisms.
