Natural Awakenings South Jersey

Animal Welfare Association Receives $250,000 Capital Campaign Gift

Maya Richmond, executive director of the Animal Welfare Association (AWA), announced that the organization’s Building a Place Where Happiness Beginscapital campaign has taken a giant leap forward with the contribution of the largest single individual donation to AWA in its 70-year history.

Animal lovers and dedicated AWA friends Albert and Barbara Dragon pledged $250,000 to galvanize community support of AWA’s $2.5 million capital campaign to fund construction of a new, modern animal adoption center to be located at AWA’s current location on Centennial Boulevard, in Voorhees.Since the fall launch of the campaign, $1.325 million has already been raised.

The building of a new adoption center isn’t just a luxury for AWA, or the South Jersey community, it’s a necessity. The current shelter, built in 1966, is showing its age. As the building deteriorates, it is becoming increasingly difficult to effectively care for the animals. On a day-to-day basis, it is also becoming a less-than-suitable environment for staff and volunteers to carry out their work. This desperately needed new center will improve care to South Jersey’s most vulnerable and needy animals while serving as a welcoming, professional appearing resource for our community’s pet-loving friends.
