The Benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, the use of aromatic plant fragrances to enhance health and well-being, has been around for centuries. While the Egyptians used essential oils to treat many diseases, aromatherapy became enjoyed on a wider scale in the 11thcentury, when the invention of steam distillation techniques facilitated the extraction of plant essential oils.
Although no in-depth prospective scientific studies on the efficacy of aromatherapy have been performed, there are some reputable studies that found that the use of fragrances have helped to decrease doses of antidepressant medication and induced a general reduction of anxiety and improved overall mood.
During aromatherapy, the fragrance molecules are absorbed by the olfactory cells in the nasal cavity, stimulating the olfactory centers in the brain and ultimately reaching the limbic system. The limbic system is an important center for pleasure, emotions and memory. It is also linked with the reason we have vivid, good memories when we smell certain foods.
Aroma-therapeutic agents are many essential oils, fragrance oils, incense sticks, cones and dried natural herbs and plants products.
