Seasons Change and So Should Your Diet

Steven Horvitz

Dr. Steven Horvitz of The Institute for Medical Wellness believes that a low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet is the way to lose weight and regulate your health system

In the years before electricity and refrigerators, diets consisted of what was available at the time. There were no pantries full of bread and pasta, no refrigerators packed with sugary sodas and juices, and carb-filled bagels and cookies didn’t grow on trees. Instead, there was only seasonally available food to consume.

In the summer fruit and vegetables were aplenty, meaning carbohydrates were readily available. While consuming fruits and vegetables is healthy, it also increases glucose in your blood, which in turn increases insulin, and then stores the excess glucose as triglycerides in your body as fat cells for future use.

On the contrary, in the winter, fruits and vegetables weren’t as plentiful. In years past, all that was available was LCHF diet of meat and fish. Known today as a paleo diet, this way of eating kept glucose and insulin down. If the body needed energy, it would burn fat cells that were stored from the summer.

This yo-yo effect of summer weight-gain and winter weight-loss continued until the invention of electricity, food transportation, and the government food industry. It was then that summer-eating continued year-round and diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer became the norm. Horvitz suggests balancing out the seasons and watch the summer weight fall off.Location: 110 Marter Ave., Moorestown. For more information, call 856-231-0590 or visit DrHorvitz.com.
