Natural Awakenings South Jersey

Get ‘Renewable’ Seeds and Tips to Succeed on August 10: On August 10, from 7 to 8 p.m., area gardeners can “borrow” seeds from the South Jersey Seed Circle Library at the Collingswood Public Library.

On August 10, from 7 to 8 p.m., area gardeners can “borrow” seeds from the South Jersey Seed Circle Library at the Collingswood Public Library. Experts will be available to address questions about caring for the seeds.

According to a recent article posted on FarmersAdvance.com, seed lending libraries are an emerging trend. The article notes that seed collections are “offered for the intention of renewing the local seed supply,” adding that 46 states and 15 countries now have such lending libraries.

A post on the South Jersey Seed Circle Library Facebook page explains that interested gardeners select their seeds–determined by season–from the lending library, provide their email address and indicate the seeds borrowed.

After the planted seeds produce viable new seeds, gardeners are encouraged to “return” some of the seeds to the library, while also keeping some for themselves.
