Introduction to Land Navigation

Learn about land navigation and then navigate the land with Brian Winterstein at his free Walk in the Wild on July 16, at 2 p.m.

Participants should meet at Willoughby House (Old Pine Farm Natural Lands Trust), located at the end of Pine Avenue in Deptford.

Winterstein, founder of Southeastern Pennsylvania Survivalist and Bushcraft, will cover such aspects of land navigation as parts of a compass and how a compass works, obtaining and following an azimuth, plotting a course using a topographic map, and distance measuring and pacing with pace beads. A “relaxed walk” follows.

Before starting the group in 2012, Winterstein had spent more than 20 years in such wilderness search and rescue capacities as chief of operations for Blue Mountain Search and Rescue, sergeant for Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue and assistant chief for Mid-Atlantic Regional Search and Rescue. He also was an at-large board member of the Pennsylvania Search and Rescue Council.

Willoughby House is located at the end of Pine Ave., off Good Intent Rd., in Blackwood Terr. (use 340 Pine Ave., Deptford, 08096, for mapping services). For more information, call Charles White, 856-217-9138. For changes and directions, visit Facebook.com/oldpinefarm.
