Meet ethnographer and cultural documentarian Martin Koenig who made half a dozen trips to Bulgaria between 1966 and 1979 and filmed, recorded, and photographed the lively, yet endangered, aspects of Bulgaria’s traditional village culture. The program will feature the story of a recording of a Bulgarian folk song launched into space in 1977 as part of a NASA project to bring a greeting from Planet Earth, and a film on traditional Bulgarian folk dancing from the period 1966-1979 made by him. Copies of his book “Sound Portraits From Bulgaria”, recently published by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, will be available for sale and signing through the Friends of the Lawrence Library.
