Local yoga studios to unite for veteran rehabilitation

Live In Joy Yoga in Audubon will host a Veterans Yoga Project Class from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 in honor of the Veterans Yoga Project.

The Veterans Yoga Project is a nonprofit advocacy organization that is dedicated to improving the health and well being of military veterans. The organization held an inaugural weeklong event last year, hosting donation-based yoga classes across the country, as part of Veterans Gratitude Week. Money raised from the classes goes to supporting recovery and promoting “resilience among veterans, their families, and our communities,” according to the organization’s website. There were a total of 96 classes held across 25 states last year.

The Veterans Yoga Project is built on several principles, including self-regulation skills, opportunities for healing through multi-retreats and mindful resilience. The organization states that yoga provides veterans with the ability to rehabilitate after both physical and psychological trauma. According to the Veterans Yoga Project, 25 percent of veterans with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) use yoga as a complimentary part of his or her treatment.

This year’s Veterans Gratitude Week will be held from Nov. 6-15. Those who wish to get involved can visit to find a class near them, or register their own class.
